We are a small family business based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, passionate about preserving history through authentic military artifacts. Established in 2014, every item in our store has a story to tell, connecting you to a meaningful piece of the past.
Item
An original U.S. Army OG-107 cotton sateen utility shirt, named to the soldier who wore it. The name tape reads CATALANO over the left pocket, with a gold on black U.S. ARMY tape on the right, and Sergeant rank on both sleeves. The interior label identifies it as a "Shirt, Man's, Cotton Sateen, OG-107" on a DSA contract, which places it in the 1960s Vietnam era.
The shirt is the standard OG-107 cut in olive sateen, with a two piece collar, exposed button front, and two pleated flap chest pockets. It has been worn and used, with soiling and toning to the cotton, honest age throughout, and a faint stamped marking at the collar. Measured flat across the chest it runs about 20 to 21 inches, which should be treated as a close approximation.
Design & Insignia
Both sleeves carry three gold chevrons on olive green, the rank of Sergeant (E-5). The gold on black U.S. ARMY tape and the color (non subdued) chevrons are the garrison presentation of the period, before subdued black on olive insignia became standard in the field, which fits an early to mid 1960s date.
On the left shoulder is a round patch with a white field and a black silhouette device (a figure in a broad brimmed hat with an axe or pole). I have not been able to firmly identify this specific insignia, and rather than guess I am describing it exactly as it appears. It looks to be the same patch worn on a companion Catalano shirt. If it can be identified, it would add unit or organizational context, but as it stands the certain facts are the branch, the rank, and the soldier's name.
History
The OG-107 sateen is one of the most recognizable American uniforms of the Cold War and Vietnam years, worn on work details, in the field, and on post from the late 1950s into the 1980s. This one is a named, rank bearing example to a Sergeant named Catalano, and it displays with real character as part of a Vietnam era U.S. Army grouping.
