I usually sell fabric or sewing related items I've purchased at estate sales. However, an occasional bout of claustrophobia will send me to the closet to clear away treasures that I haven't used in years and hold no interest to my children. Even suggesting the prized piece is a family heirloom does not convince my mimimalist offspring to accept the gift. Their loss is your gain.

I will be listing several Vintage Wedgwood Flying Cloud Rust 5-Piece Place Settings over the next few days for auction. Living in coastal New England, I love the way this pattern reflects history. 

Let me tell you about the vintage dinnerware:

• The line was introduced by Wedgwood in 1969 and discontinued in 1993
• This line was part of Wedgwood’s Georgetown Collection (sometimes referred to as the Georgian Collection)
• This line uses colonial-style transferware--a pattern applied by "transferring" the print from a copper plate to paper ad then to the pottery
• The central motif features a detailed illustration of the famous American clipper ship, the Flying Cloud, which set the 1851 world record for the fastest passage sailing between New York and San Francisco
• The shape of the dinnerware is not the typical round, but a unique multisided, octagonal shape
• The line is creamware or stoneware--Historically, creamware was perfected in the 1760s by Josiah Wedgwood, who famously dubbed it "Queen's Ware"

The standard five-piece place setting shown in the pictures consists of:

• Dinner Plate: 10 ¼ inches
• Salad/Sandwich Plate: 8 ⅛ to 8 ⅜ inches
• Bread & Butter Plate: 6 to 6 ⅛ inches
• Cup: 2 ⅝ inches high (approx. 6 oz capacity)
• Saucer: 5 ⅝ to 5 ¾ inches
