A set of letter tiles from the French luxury goods store Alphonse Giroux (finally closed in 1885) - this probably dates from between then and 1850 when they began cabinetmaking.
There are 300+ tiles - each tile has the upper case letter on one side and the lower case on the reverse of the tile. There are a number of vowels with diacritical marks and a joined oe.
Letter tiles are a maximum of 3.5 x 2.5cm.
The box, probably mahogany has a sliding lid that works well and is 22.5 x 17cm and divided into 32 compartments.
This is a donated item in very good condition for age. One of the 300+ tiles is cracked (see S in photos), the lettering on a number of tiles is worn (see photos of V and I). The box is in good condition apart from a few cracks along the base (see photo).
