Item Description

Item

An original U.S. Army women's Army Green (shade AG-344) Service Uniform Coat — the "Class A" dress coat of the Cold War-era Army. It is tailored in the women's classic design with a notched lapel, four gold-tone U.S. eagle buttons, lower flap pockets, shoulder loops (epaulettes), and a rich green satin lining. This is inventory #G421.

The interior manufacturer's label reads "COAT, WOMAN'S, POLY/WOOL SERGE AG-344, CLASSIC DESIGN," contract No. 8031-82, fabric 55% polyester / 45% wool, produced for the Defense Personnel Support Center. The neck size tag is marked 14R, with NSN 8410-01-105-4143. The "-82" contract suffix and the "01" NSN block both date the coat to the early-to-mid 1980s. The coat presents clean and sound, with the bright gold buttons intact and the lining in good order; it carries no rank, branch, or unit insignia.

Design

The Army Green Service Uniform, introduced in the mid-1950s in the distinctive Army Shade 44/344 green, became the everyday dress uniform of American soldiers for roughly half a century. The women's coat followed a tailored, feminine cut distinct from the men's version but in the same regulation green poly-wool serge. The gold-colored buttons carry the U.S. coat-of-arms eagle, the standard device for the Army service uniform. The green satin lining and the "classic design" pattern noted on the label mark this as the standardized 1980s production version issued through the Defense Personnel Support Center.

Sizing note: no scale reference photo was included, but the garment is factory-tagged 14R (size 14, regular length) — a woman's regular fit. Flat measurements can be provided on request.

History

By the time this coat was made in the early 1980s, women were a fully integrated part of the Regular Army. The Women's Army Corps (WAC) was disestablished in 1978, and the female soldiers who wore this green service coat did so as members of their branches alongside the men, not as a separate corps. Uniforms like this were worn to duty, ceremonies, inspections, and off-post through the height of the late Cold War — the era of REFORGER exercises, a NATO standoff in Europe, and a rapidly expanding role for women in the U.S. military. The Army Green Uniform soldiered on until it was phased out in favor of the blue Army Service Uniform around 2010, making surviving AG-344 pieces a tangible piece of a now-retired chapter of Army dress.
