Item
An original U.S. Marine Corps M-1941 Pack System lower component — the Knapsack (lower cargo pack) — in olive drab cotton canvas. The M-1941 (often marked "P-41") was the Marine Corps' distinctive two-part field pack, and this is the bottom section that coupled beneath the upper haversack to add cargo capacity for extended field operations.
The knapsack shows the classic construction of the system: a canvas body with a flap secured by web tab straps and blackened open-face buckles, internal cotton tie tapes for lashing down the load, and the coupling/suspension straps with blackened double-hook fittings that let it attach to the haversack above or be carried on its own. It presents with honest service wear — soiling, staining and toning to the canvas, contrast between the darker green body and the lighter web straps, and light wear to the hardware — but remains complete and structurally sound.
Design
The USMC M-1941 pack was a modular system: an upper haversack for the main load and a detachable lower knapsack (this piece) for additional gear. The lower pack's coupling strap threaded through loops on the bottom of the haversack to lock the two together, giving a Marine either a light marching pack (haversack alone) or a full field load (both components joined). Early-war examples were made in lighter khaki shades; production continued for decades in the darker OD green seen here. The tie-tape closure, web straps, and blackened hardware are all standard features of the Marine pack.
Measurement note: no scale reference photo was included, so dimensions are given as estimates in the general range of a lower knapsack — roughly 12 in wide by 12 in tall by around 4–5 in deep (approx. 30 x 30 x 12 cm). Marking note: no clearly legible maker's stamp or contract date shows in these photos; the single detail that would pin the exact year and depot is a legible ink stamp inside the flap or body ("P-41" / maker / year), often faded on these packs.
History
The M-1941 pack is one of the most iconic pieces of U.S. Marine Corps field gear of the twentieth century. It went ashore on the beaches of the Pacific War — Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa — carried by the Marines who fought island to island against the Japanese. Because the design worked so well, it stayed in service far beyond WWII, seeing use through the Korean War and into Vietnam, with production running into the late 1960s. This OD green lower knapsack represents that long service life. As a genuine component of the legendary Marine pack system, it's a strong piece for a Pacific War or USMC field-gear display, and a natural companion to a matching M-1941 haversack.
