Item
An original Second World War Imperial Japanese Army specialist trade/artificer arm badge (臂章, hishō) — a sleeve insignia identifying a soldier's craft or technical appointment within his unit. It is hand-constructed from a red wool-felt device appliquéd onto an olive-drab wool ground, the emblem cut and hand-stitched in place, with the outline of the securing stitches visible on the reverse. The badge measures approximately 3.0 cm wide by 3.0 cm tall; as the piece rests beside the Lobo Forensics scale in the photograph, this is a close-approximate reading. The felt shows honest age, and the construction is fully consistent with a genuine period-made, uniform-removed piece rather than a reproduction.
Design
The red device is a solid emblem with a broad horizontal body, a raised central point at the top, and small feet at the lower corners — the profile of a metalworking or mechanical tool, most closely resembling an anvil. It belongs to the row of red-felt specialist arm badges (臂章) shown on the official period plate of Japanese Army trade insignia, worn on the lower sleeve to mark a soldier's particular craft. The red-felt-on-olive construction is the standard subdued wartime form of these trade markings, distinct from the gilt metal collar devices that denoted the combat branches. The heavy, industrial character of the device points to one of the metalworking or mechanical artificer trades.
History
The Imperial Japanese Army depended on a corps of skilled tradesmen — the smiths, metalworkers, mechanics, and armorers who forged, repaired, and maintained the hardware of war in the field. A blacksmith or metalworker kept edged tools, fittings, wagon and gun hardware, and countless iron components serviceable on campaign, working forge and anvil far from any factory. These specialists held craft appointments and wore distinctive trade badges on the sleeve to mark their skill within the unit. Such insignia survives far less often than ordinary rank markings, which makes any genuine period artificer's arm badge an uncommon and characterful collectible — a tangible link to the technical backbone that kept a Japanese Army unit equipped and in the fight.
