?

We are a small family business based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, passionate about preserving history through authentic military artifacts. Established in 2014, every item in our store has a story to tell ? connecting you to a meaningful piece of the past.

Item Description

 Item

An original Second World War Imperial Japanese Army specialist trade arm badge (臂章, hishō) for the ordnance and pyrotechnic trade. It is hand-made from a red wool-felt device appliquéd onto an olive-drab wool ground, the emblem cut and hand-stitched in place, with the securing stitches visible on the reverse. The badge measures approximately 3.5 cm tall by 2.8 cm wide; as the piece rests beside the Lobo Forensics scale in the photograph, this is a close-approximate reading. The felt shows honest age, and the construction is fully consistent with a genuine period-made, uniform-removed piece rather than a modern reproduction.

Design

The red device is a flaming bomb — a round shell body with flames issuing from the top — the traditional emblem of the ordnance and pyrotechnic trade (火工, kakō). Read against the official period plate of Japanese Army trade insignia, it belongs to the row of red-felt specialist arm badges (臂章) worn on the lower sleeve to identify a soldier's craft within his unit. The flaming-bomb (or "flaming grenade") device has been the universal heraldic mark of ordnance and ammunition specialists in armies worldwide, and the red-felt-on-olive construction is the standard subdued wartime form of these Japanese trade markings.

History

The ordnance and pyrotechnic tradesman held one of the most demanding and dangerous specialist roles in the Imperial Japanese Army. He was responsible for the handling, preparation, inspection, and care of ammunition, fuzes, signal and illuminating pyrotechnics, and the explosive stores on which a unit's firepower depended — exacting, hazardous work in which a single mistake could be fatal. His flaming-bomb badge marked him out as the man trusted with the unit's ammunition and pyrotechnics. Specialist trade insignia survives far less often than ordinary rank markings, so a genuine period ordnance-trade arm badge is an uncommon and characterful collectible — a tangible link to the skilled and hazardous work behind a Japanese Army unit's firepower.
