Product Description
Below is the detailed description of the product:
This is an original mid-19th century American brass horse-equipment fitting of the type used on U.S. cavalry saddlery — a martingale, or breast-strap, heart. Cast in brass, it takes the form of a functional strap clasp with a wire bail loop at the top and an open slot at the base to receive the mating strap or hook, and its face is dominated by a boldly raised, hand-finished heart in relief. The reverse shows the honest casting texture, the soldered bail, and a warm, uncleaned patina with earthen and age-toned coloring consistent with a genuine period-carried and long-stored piece. It measures approximately 4.5 cm in overall length including the bail by roughly 2.5 cm across the heart body; as the piece rests just above the forensic scale in the photograph, this is a close-approximate reading. There is no visible maker's mark on the reverse.
The heart is one of the most enduring motifs in American cavalry horse furniture. As the saddler and military historians note, the heart was the natural shape for the point where the straps of a saddle's breast strap intersect, and that junction "pretty much demanded ornamentation." From 1857 onward U.S. dragoons were required to carry plain brass hearts on their saddle breast straps, and the form carried straight through the Civil War and into the Indian Wars era, with officers' and militia saddlery often adding eagles, regimental numbers, or state devices. A functional heart-form clasp such as this one sat at the working intersection of the breast strap and martingale, both bearing the traditional ornament and doing the practical job of joining and adjusting the leather that steadied the saddle on a hard-charging cavalry mount.
For the collector, this is a tangible piece of the mounted service — the kind of unglamorous but essential hardware that outfitted the horses of the Union and Confederate cavalry and the Regular Army dragoons who preceded them. Hardware from the tack and harness of Civil War horse soldiers survives in far smaller numbers than buttons or bullets, and a well-preserved brass martingale heart with its bail and slot intact makes a distinctive and genuinely American display piece, evoking the cavalry column and the horse that carried the trooper into the campaigns of the 1860s.
