Atoms for Peace Dirigible
A proposal that the United States build an atomic-powered dirigible to house and transport the nation's Atoms for Peace exhibition is made by artist-author Frank Tinsley in the March Mechanics Illustrated magazine. Tinsley offers the dirigible idea in his own sketch as an alternative to the Atoms for Peace ship proposal by President Dwight Eisenhower.
Tinsley says the initial cost of a dirigible would be less than a ship and would have more unique appeal than an ocean-going vessel. It would carry an extensive display.
The proposed 1,000-foot-long dirigible has a radar dome on the nose, with control cabin windows just behind. Along the spine of the craft are promenade decks, and slung on the bottom is the large detachable exhibition hall. On the sides, behind the wing stubs, are a gangway and passenger cabins. The pontoon floats are retractable.
