The family Sheriff is traced to Quainton, Buckinghamshire ca. 1525, with a branch moving to Abthorpe, Northampton where the name changed to "Sherriff". One descendant, Christopher Sherriff, married Mary Hopcraft at Abthrope, in 1814. Three of their sons, Benjamin (1816), George (1825), and Humphrey (1822) were transported to Australia between 1839-1841. Descendants lived primarily in Australia and New Zealand.
