We approached the design the same way the original was conceived: subtract until only the essential remains.
The fully frosted crystal case nods to late-’80s and early-’90s translucent tech — the era of see-through plastics and visible circuitry — but here it serves a purpose. When the blue INDIGLO® backlight activates, the entire case is softly illuminated, revealing the watch's mechanism within.
In pursuit of visual lightness, the dial has been aggressively pared back and excess text removed. The original bezel markings indicating water resistance and the “Light,” “Set,” and “Mode” functions have been replaced with a black Hodinkee signature and discreet black dot markers—nothing more than what you need. Proportions remain faithful to the original 1986 footprint, measuring 39mm across and 10.5mm thick. The compact case sits flat against the wrist, and at just 31.26 grams, the watch preserves the featherweight ergonomics that made the IRONMAN such an indispensable training companion.
The 23mm light grey strap tapers to 18mm, finished in a soft matte texture that feels broken-in from day one. Glossy white IRONMAN logos at either end provide just enough contrast to provide a quiet reminder of its lineage.
A watch rooted in the moment the IRONMAN first defined accessible performance — now rendered cleaner, lighter, and more wearable than ever.
