1960 Original Press Photo Richard Burton The Bramble Bush Warner Bros Film

Description

An original black-and-white press photograph showing Richard Burton as Dr Guy Montford in the 1960 Warner Bros. film The Bramble Bush.

Burton is photographed in a serious studio portrait, seated with his arms folded across one raised knee and looking directly towards the camera. The restrained pose and intense expression reflect the difficult moral decision faced by his character during the film.

The original typed newspaper caption attached to the reverse reads:

“Richard Burton plays the doctor faced with a terrible decision in The Bramble Bush (Warner).”

In the film, Burton plays Dr Guy Montford, a physician who returns to his Massachusetts hometown to care for his childhood friend Larry McFie, who is dying from cancer. Larry eventually asks Guy to end his suffering, forcing the doctor to choose between his professional duties, the law and compassion for his friend.

Directed by Daniel Petrie, The Bramble Bush was adapted from the novel by Charles Mergendahl and also starred Barbara Rush, Angie Dickinson, Jack Carson, Tom Drake and James Dunn. Warner Bros. released the film in 1960.

The reverse is dated 14 May 1960 and refers to the Blyth News. It also carries a Shields Gazette Library stamp, the original caption, manuscript measurements and numerous contemporary editorial markings.

This is a particularly attractive early portrait of Burton from the original release period of an identifiable film. It predates the epic productions and immense international celebrity that characterised his later career.

This is a genuine original press photograph and not a modern reproduction.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph of this age. There is light overall toning, minor surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Slight edge and corner wear, gentle curvature and several light creases and pressure marks are present.

Two small brownish circular stains are visible in the upper-right background. A light vertical crease or handling line appears near the left margin, with a few further minor marks and imperfections across the image.

The principal portrait remains clear and well contrasted, retaining strong detail throughout Burton’s face, hair and clothing.

The reverse displays age-related toning, handling marks, the original typed caption, Shields Gazette Library stamp, date, sizing instructions and extensive contemporary editorial annotations.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
