PEP COMICS #11 — CGC 1.8 (GD-)
MLJ Magazines · January 1941 · Off-White Pages
1st APPEARANCE OF DUSTY — THE SHIELD'S SIDEKICK
CGC Certification #2071295008
A labeled Golden Age key with a signed Irv Novick cover. Please read the condition notes carefully before bidding — this is a low-grade copy with significant disclosed restoration-adjacent defects, offered for the key content and the cover.
First appearance of Dusty
CGC has notated "1st appearance of Dusty" directly on the label. Dusty, the Boy Detective, is the Shield's sidekick — and the cover of this very issue announces him: "EXTRA!! NEW!! DUSTY THE BOY DETECTIVE WITH THE SHIELD."
January 1941 makes Dusty one of the earliest kid sidekicks in comics — on newsstands before Bucky Barnes appeared alongside Captain America. Collectors who track the Golden Age sidekick debuts need this book, and the CGC designation means it doesn't require an argument.
The Shield — the first patriotic superhero
The Shield debuted in Pep Comics #1, cover-dated January 1940, and is widely credited as the first patriotic-costumed superhero in comics, predating Captain America by over a year. That distinction drives steady demand for early Pep issues, and a Shield cover with the Dusty debut on the same book is a strong combination.
The cover
Signed NOVICK at lower left. The Shield charges through a wall of flame in his red, white and blue striped costume while a green-faced hooded saboteur opens up on him with a machine gun, a second green-faced figure slumps in a wrecked cockpit at left, and Dusty swings down off the wing of a crashing plane silhouetted against a yellow sun. Airfield hangars burn in the background amid strewn wreckage. Pre-Pearl Harbor sabotage imagery at full volume. "ACTION DETECTIVE ADVENTURE." Ten cents, fifteen in Canada.

Pep Comics = the Archie title
Pep Comics is the book in which Archie Andrews debuts at issue #22, and MLJ Magazines is the publisher that renamed itself Archie Comics. #11 is a pre-Archie Pep — collected both as early MLJ superhero material and as part of the run leading into one of the most valuable keys in the hobby.
Back cover bonus
Full-page Jim Prentice Electric Football ad from the Electric Game Company, 11 Bridge Street, Holyoke, Massachusetts — "OVER For a TOUCHDOWN!" The 1941 model at $2, with Electric Baseball, Electric Ice Hockey and Electric Basketball alongside it, a free transformer with any three-game order, and a "Hi Boys!" note from Prentice himself. A wonderful 1941 period piece.
Condition notes — please read
CGC 1.8 (GD-) with Off-White page quality. CGC has notated on the label:
This is a significant defect and is the reason for the grade. Additional wear visible in the photos includes edge and corner wear, creasing, soiling and general handling. That said, the cover colors are genuinely bright for the grade — the red logo panel, the Shield's costume and the flames all present strongly, and the book displays far better face-out than 1.8 would suggest.
This is offered as an affordable way into a labeled first appearance. Photos show the actual book being sold; please examine them closely and ask any questions before bidding.
