VDG Militaria - Preserving History

Product Description

Below is the detailed description of the product:

This is a United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps insignia device — the caduceus-and-anchor emblem of one of America's lesser-known uniformed services.

Most people don't realize that the United States has eight uniformed services, and the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is one of them, alongside the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force, and NOAA Corps. Its officers wear uniforms and rank modeled on the Navy's, and they serve on the front lines of the nation's health — fighting epidemics, staffing the Indian Health Service and federal hospitals, responding to disasters, and protecting the public from disease. The Corps traces its roots all the way back to 1798 and the Marine Hospital Service, created to care for sick and injured merchant seamen.

That history is written directly into the insignia. The device combines two symbols: the caduceus — the winged staff entwined with serpents, the age-old emblem of medicine — superimposed on a fouled anchor, the maritime symbol that recalls the service's origins caring for the nation's sailors. This caduceus-and-anchor is the official corps device of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. On this example it is mounted on a gold cross; the standard corps collar device is the caduceus-and-anchor by itself, so the cross is an additional element to this particular piece.

The device is finished in bright gold tone with clutch-back fittings and is marked "V-21" on the reverse, consistent with modern insignia manufacture. It measures approximately 1 inch (25 mm) across the cross. It remains in bright, clean condition. An interesting and uncommon piece for the collector of American uniformed-service insignia, medical and public-health history, or the many badges of the nation's eight services.
