THE FIGHTING YANK #24 — CGC 6.0 (FN)
Nedor Publications · April 1948 · Off-White to White Pages
CGC Certification #1292675001
Late-run Fighting Yank in a solid mid-grade with excellent paper, housed in a CGC Universal (blue label) holder. No restoration and no defects noted on the label.
The cover
A theatrical setting — footlights, a drum, instruments and stage curtains — as the Fighting Yank in his blue tricorn hat and green cape lands a haymaker on a tuxedoed villain, flipping him clean over backward with an impact burst at the jaw. A blonde in a full red evening gown sprawls across the foreground. Bold red logo running down the left edge, ten cents.
Why this one
Fighting Yank ran to 29 issues, and the postwar issues had smaller print runs than the wartime books — later-run copies in mid-grade or better are harder to turn up than the numbers alone suggest. The red-gown figure gives it a good girl art element that widens the buyer pool beyond patriotic hero collectors.
Paper quality is the standout here. CGC graded the pages Off-White to White, which is genuinely uncommon for a 78-year-old newsprint comic and is what separates this from the tanned, brittle copies that make up most of the surviving population.
Back cover bonus
Full-page EVEREADY batteries ad — "HOW TO SIGNAL A CAR FOR HELP AT NIGHT," with AAA-endorsed roadside advice on flagging down a passing motorist, how to improvise a red danger signal with cellophane and a rubber band, and the claim that "EVEREADY BATTERIES OUTLAST ALL OTHER BRANDS!" National Carbon Company, 30 East 42nd Street. A nicely photo-illustrated postwar period piece.
