On
offer are a nice example of the books "Albert N'Yanza Great
Basin of the Nile and Explorations of the Nile Sources" volumes
I and II. They were written by the English explorer Sir Samuel W.
Baker (1821 - 1893). They date from 1867, and are first edition
hardbacks that were published
by Macmillan and Co. of London. They were printed by R Clay, Son, and
Taylor of Bread Street Hill, London. In the back of vol. II is a
small sticker marked "Bound By Burn 37 & 38 Kirby St".
Please take a good look at the pictures as they form part of
the item description.
The
books measure about 19.5cm x 13cm (7½"
x 5½"), and contain 371pp & 372pp bound in green
cloth covered boards. Illustration to the fronts, and titling to the
spines are in gold gilt. Throughout both books are delightful
illustrations. Volume I has a book dealers embossed stamp at the
front for Edwin Slater, Doncaster. Book II has an owners library
sticker inside the front cover.
In
vol. I there is a full page dedication to Queen Victoria, a single
page colour map, and a larger fold-out map that has some minor damage
and a small tear. The first volume is broken internally at the
beginning with 4 pages becoming loose. Volume two is much better with
a firm binding all the way through. I do not think either book has
any missing pages.
The
pages are all lightly tanned with age, and some have foxing/age marks
on them. There are no rips or repairs to the books, but there a few
small page edge chips, pencil marks, and some light creases here and
there. There are minor grubby marks to some pages from handling.
The
covers are a bit grubby, and are have some fading and marking as
pictured. There is corner and edge bumping and rubbing, and also
bumping and rubbing to the top and bottom of the spine. The spine is
intact on both books.
As
you can tell from the description these are not perfect. Despite
the cosmetic faults these are still lovely old books. They make
interesting reading, and will display well in any collection.
