On
offer is a lovely example of a limited edition commemorative bowl
produced for The Worshipful Company of Barbers. It was issued to
commemorate 600th Election of a Master of the Company on the 10th
August 1989. The bowl was made by Royal Doulton, and is number 441 of
a run of 500. The artwork was done by Peter Cull who was the Chairman
of the Medical Artists' Association. Please take a good look at all
the pictures as they form part of the item description.
The
Worshipful Company of Barbers is a livery company - a type of guild -
that was founded in 1308 in City of London. It originally combined
the trades of hair-cutting and shaving with medical and surgical
practices. Surgeon Barbers performed bloodletting, tooth extraction,
and minor surgery alongside hair care. Charitable giving now focuses
heavily on medical education, relieving suffering, and supporting
City of London causes.
The
bone china bowl measures about 22.5cm (9")
in diameter. The bowl has a white background, and is edged with a
dark green border decorated with gold gilding. In the centre of the
bowl is the coat of arms for the Barber's company. The gilding is
good, and the colours on the decoration are crisp and bright. On the
back of the bowl is a Royal Doulton makers mark stamped in black. It
is also stamped with the limited edition number of 441 of 500,
and details the members of the board.
There
are no chips, cracks or restorations to the item, but there may be
some very light marks from storage and handling. There is no original
box or paperwork included in the auction.
Despite
any light cosmetic faults this is still a lovely collectors piece. It
displays well, and will make a delightful addition to any collection.
