On offer is a genuine handwritten letter/note by Sir Squire Bancroft. It is in black ink, and is on notepaper that is embossed with his home address of 18 Berkeley Square. The letter is dated Feb 23 1891, but I'm not sure who it was sent to. Please take a good look at the pictures as they form part of the item description.

Sir Squire Bancroft (14 May 1841 – 19 April 1926) was born Squire White Butterfield. He was an English actor / manager who changed his name by deed pole. He and his wife Lady Bancroft (stage name Effie Wilton) created a new form of drama known as "drawing room comedy". Both appeared in a performance called "Masks and Faces". They produced and starred in many plays until their retirement in 1918. I've tried to decipher the letter as best as I can. I believe the wording is something along these lines:-

Dear Sir. 

Mrs Bancroft is ? much occuppied and has asked me to say on her behalf that the tableaux are not to be actual copies of known pictures but in some cases suggested by ?? ?? being imaginary. The picture from "Masks and Faces" is an accident in the third act where Peg Wolfington puts her own face through the canvas and deceives the critics. 

Yours faithfully Squire Bancroft.

The paper is a bit grubby and tanned, and has been folded for storage as the pictures clearly show.

Despite any cosmetic faults this is an interesting piece of theatre memorabilia. It displays well, and will make a nice addition to any collection.
