Antique English Creamware plate, most likely Leeds, decorated in Holland with a delightful ‘Orangist’ (Oranjebord) patriotic image of William V of Orange and an inscription below all within a simple sparse leaf wreath border. The inscription reads “Zoo lang als zon en maan zal staan” (As long as the sun and moon shall shine).
These ”Oranjebord" plates were made between 1780-1795. They typically used English plates often from Leeds because it was cheaper and better quality than the Dutch potteries. It was a troubled period politically between monarchists and patriots which ended in 1795 when William fled to England. He became the last official Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic before it became a French kingdom ruled by Napoleon’s brother, Louis.
After 230+ years it has some wear, noticeably to the enamel and a chip in the lower left. Please inspect photos.
