The Pentax smc DA 16-45mm F4 ED AL was Pentax's first zoom lens designed from the ground up for digital APS-C sensors, launched in December 2003 as a standard wide-to-normal zoom for the K-mount system. It gives a versatile 24-68mm equivalent range on APS-C bodies, with a constant f/4 maximum aperture held steady throughout the entire zoom, so exposure stays predictable whether shooting wide or at the long end.

Optically, the lens combines an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) element with two aspherical (AL) elements to control chromatic aberration and distortion, delivering crisp, high-contrast results well suited to landscape, architecture, and everyday walk-around use. Its Super Multi-Coating (SMC) helps suppress flare and ghosting in backlit conditions. A 6-blade diaphragm and 13-element, 10-group design round out the optical formula.
