Three vintage Tootsie Roll wrappers made for the Knights of Columbus fundraising campaign benefiting people with intellectual disabilities. These are interesting pieces of Knights of Columbus, charitable fundraising, and vintage candy advertising history.
The Knights of Columbus later changed the name of its Tootsie Roll fundraiser to remove the outdated phrase “Helping People with Mental Retardation,” terminology once commonly used but now considered offensive. These older wrappers reflect the language used by the campaign at that time.
The change paralleled a broader shift toward the term “intellectual disability,” including Rosa’s Law in 2010, which updated terminology used in U.S. federal law.
