These little children were modeled in the 1930s by Freda Doughty. They were revolutionary for their time as before then figurines had stayed in the classical tradition. Suddenly, here were real children from all over the exotic mysterious world of the times so everyone had to collect them! You can see how one is cute but a collection of them transports you back to that innocent wonder of the 1930s.
It is interesting to note that much of the collectible hand-painted porcelains of Britain in the 1930s were made by women. They were hired because painting (or modeling) china was considered a woman’s job but likely they were cheaper than men! The result was a distinctly more lively and playful aesthetic than the classical stuff that came before.
These are not the very first production, which had hand painted names, but from 1949 (from the V under the crest). They are in very good condition and haven't been played with and beaten up like some I've seen. They are lovely collector pieces and deserve to be preserved and admired.
