DESCRIPTION:  Birdwatcher proficiency badge, Master Grade, rectangular, Silk, ribbon design, this proficiency skill and particular badge was used in the South African Boy Scouts program

This is an exceptionally hard-to-find crest, the relatively unique and challenging skills or test requirements, that varied over the years, may partially explain the relative rarity of this badge, see rule below

Style Variation: rectangular, Silk, ribbon (this style variation is thought to have been produced in the mid 1970’s) 

Size:                   Approximately 1 ¼” x 2 1/8” wide or 32 mm by 54 mm in size

Background Information:

-many international Scouting programs adopted multi-level proficiency skills, in this era South Africa had a first level badge and requirements, Standard Grade, and an advanced level badge and requirements, Master Grade

-as was the case in most Commonwealth countries, the Boy Scouts program was identical to the UK system in the early years of Scouting, then each jurisdiction began developing and adopting a program and the associated badges and materials that were more representative of the individual country or territory, for example winter skills were introduced where appropriate

-the other unique feature of the South African system in this era was that the badges featured 2 different distinct manufacturing styles, Swiss stitched badges and silk, ribbon badges
