Glasgow Girl Manner Pottery Tea Cup and Saucer Hand Painted Butterfly Design Scottish Arts & Crafts c1900 18cm
A charming and scarce tea cup and saucer very much in the manner of Glasgow Girl pottery, dating to the early 1900s, beautifully hand decorated with a Butterflies and with a hand painted blacbird pipe within the cup. The playful subject, confident brushwork and strong graphic green and black geometric rim are highly characteristic of the Scottish Arts & Crafts / Glasgow Style movement.
The plate is hand painted throughout and carries a signature to the reverse, confirming its studio and artistic origin. A delightful and highly collectible example of early 20th-century Scottish decorative pottery, ideal for collectors of Glasgow School, Arts & Crafts ceramics, or animal-themed art pottery.

About the Glasgow Girls:
The Glasgow Girls were a loosely connected group of women artists and designers active in and around Glasgow at the turn of the twentieth century. The term was later coined in 1968 by William Buchanan to describe the female counterparts of the better-known Glasgow Boys. Rather than being a single movement, the Glasgow Girls worked across a wide range of disciplines and styles, often independently, yet were united by shared experiences and mutual support.
Artists associated with the Glasgow Girls include Jessie Marion King, Margaret and Frances Macdonald, Bessie MacNicol, Annie French, Helen Paxton Brown, and Stansmore Dean, among others. Their work is now highly regarded for its originality, craftsmanship and contribution to the Arts & Crafts movement in Scotland.
