About This Camera
Released in 2010 as the successor to the K-7, the K-5 kept the same rugged, weather-sealed body and simply upgraded what was underneath — and the upgrades were significant. At its heart is a 16.3-megapixel CMOS sensor (closely related to the sensor found in the Nikon D7000) paired with the PRIME II image processor, delivering a sensitivity range from ISO 80 all the way to ISO 51200 and genuinely class-leading low-light performance for its era. Autofocus gets a real boost too, with the newer 11-point SAFOX IX+ module offering faster, more accurate focusing than the K-7 it replaced. Continuous shooting jumps to 7 frames per second, and the shutter is rated for 100,000 actuations — this particular body, with only 5,873 shutter actuations, has barely been broken in. The stainless steel chassis and magnesium alloy shell carry over 77 weather, dust, and cold-resistant seals, rated to operate down to -10°C, and the optical viewfinder offers full 100% coverage at 0.92x magnification for accurate composition. Full HD 1080p video recording, sensor-shift Shake Reduction compatible with every K-mount lens ever made, and a bright 3" 921k-dot LCD round out a camera that remains a genuinely capable, do-everything DSLR for Pentax shooters today.
