Up for sale is this exceptional antique K. Fabergé hand-carved jade hippopotamus figurine, beautifully sculpted from pale celadon-green natural jade stone with attractive natural variations in colour and tone. The figurine is jewelled with 14K gold and diamonds, with the eyes inlaid with old-cut diamonds and the feet overlaid in solid gold.

The figure depicts a standing hippopotamus with a wonderfully rounded body, expressive head, and carefully carved anatomical details. The polished surface gives the stone a soft, lustrous appearance, while the subtle variations of green add character to the piece, as you can expect from the world-famous workshop. All gold pieces are marked with 56 zolotnik gold hallmarks and the KF master's monogram. The figurine originates from a private collection in Paris and comes in the original old Moroccan leather box, tooled in gold Empire motif grlands, in which it was found.

A very decorative and unusual piece, appealing both as a jade carving and as an animal figurine. It is in excellent condition, with one internal hairline in the stone at one toe.
