A beautiful and unusual antique expanding accordion gate-top purse (Beggar's Bag) in a rich purple leather with an intricate brass-tone expanding frame.

The expanding mechanism works smoothly and opens and closes exactly as it should, making it a fascinating example of late Victorian/Edwardian ingenuity. A highly decorative piece that would make a wonderful addition to any collection of antique handbags, curiosities or dressing table accessories.

Condition
In good antique condition. The expanding metal mechanism is fully functional and operates smoothly. There are signs of age and use consistent with its age, and the leather remains attractive with a lovely deep purple colour.  There are some later stitches/re-stitching to the fabric around the frame, as shown, and the purse remains intact and fully functional. Please refer to the photographs as they form part of the description.
