In very good condition. Glossy white wrappers with black italic lettering. Amber adhesive residue at top-right of front cover where a label has lifted. Mild shelf wear, with light bumping and creasing to cover edges and corners. Staple bound, binding tight. Otherwise unmarked. A setting of six cat poems from Don Marquis's archy and mehitabel, scored for the unusual pairing of soprano and solo double bass. Composed in 1972 while Seamarks was working nights as a hospital porter in London (the source of the third song, Night Porter's Song), the cycle was championed by the double bass virtuoso Barry Guy, a founder of the London Jazz Composers' Orchestra and a central figure in European free improvisation, who gave the first performance with soprano Noelle Barker in a Spectrum Concert at the Purcell Room, London, in 1973. The work opens with a virtuoso double-bass introduction for the alley cat Mehitabel. Texts by Don Marquis, C.A. Coburn, and Sydney Seamarks.
