This is the original *What and How: A Practical Cook Book for Everyday Living* by Mrs. Rebecca Gibbons Tatnall Bush, published by Miss Edna N. Taylor and printed by the New Amstel Magazine Company of Wilmington, Delaware in 1910.
Mrs. Bush was born in Delaware in 1853 and passed away in 1927. This volume represents her collected recipes and legacy for her family.
It was in the possession of the Fairhope Public Library until a sale in the 1990s and has been held by private collectors since.
The inside cover features vintage library markings, and both the initial pages and the inside back cover contain additional handwritten recipe notes—a common practice in family cookbooks throughout history.
The pages are discolored by age and presumably by kitchen ingredients from decades of use.
The cover is worn and scuffed, and the spine is discolored, bearing the original Dewey decimal cataloging numbers from its time in the library. The spine and binding remain completely intact with no loose pages.
Additional handwritten recipes are written on the blank pages near the back, including a recipe for English plum pudding by Virginia F. (featured in the third photo). There are also additional handwritten recipes on the blank pages at the front of the book. Fascinating local vintage business advertisements are included in the back matter as well. I have not noted any missing pages.
