London Brighton & South Coast Railway luggage label, in condition as shown
The L.B. & S.C.R. was formed in 1846 from an amalgamation of the London & Brighton and the London & Croydon Railways and associated Companies. The early large destination labels, produced up to around 1880, were c. 95mm x 60mm, then superceded by a standardised label c.89mm x 47mm. There are some slightly larger than standard 'intermediate' type labels with a spidery typeface used for the originating station. All labels, on white paper, had both the originating & destinations stations shown and some of the early ones had a red typeface rather than black. Green labels, with just the destination shown were not introduced until c. 1914, although even some of these showed the originating station and all had '34' stock codes.
Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways. Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century
