An original black-and-white press wirephoto showing Peter Sutcliffe under heavy police escort at Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court on 20 February 1981, the day he was committed for trial on thirteen charges of murder and seven charges of attempted murder.
Sutcliffe is largely concealed beneath a light-coloured blanket as officers move him between a barred police van and the courthouse entrance. A plain-clothes detective walks immediately in front of the covered figure, while uniformed officers form a close protective cordon around him. The open rear door of the secure vehicle, substantial police presence and purposeful movement create a particularly immediate record of the stringent security surrounding the proceedings.
The date is confirmed by the contemporary 20 February 1981 stamp on the reverse. The original caption sheet is no longer present, but the date, courthouse setting, police van and blanket-covered prisoner correspond with contemporary coverage of Sutcliffe’s appearance at Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court that day. The photograph appears to belong to the same transmitted sequence as the separately captioned Dewsbury wirephoto described by its original newsroom note as one of three images showing “Sutcliffe leaving court”.
On 20 February 1981, Peter Sutcliffe was committed for trial at Dewsbury Magistrates’ Court on thirteen murder charges and seven charges of attempted murder. The hearing lasted approximately fourteen minutes and transferred the proceedings to the Crown Court. Police brought him to the court early in an attempt to avoid the hostile crowds and disorder that had accompanied his first appearance on 5 January.
The photograph is especially effective because it records the accused at close range within the physical process of court security. Although Sutcliffe’s face is obscured, the blanket itself became a characteristic feature of contemporary photographs of his court movements, reflecting attempts to prevent clear press images while proceedings remained active.
Unlike a later reproduction or retrospective illustration, this is a genuine working wirephoto transmitted for contemporary newspaper use. The slightly softened definition, strong tonal contrasts and black transmission borders are characteristic of the wire process. The reverse retains a faint newspaper-library stamp, the contemporary date and traces of former newsroom handling.
Good condition for an original working wirephoto. There is light age-related toning, minor surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. The sheet has slight curvature, together with small marginal creases and modest edge and corner wear. Black transmission and editorial border lines remain visible around the image.
The reverse has light overall toning, faint surface marks and traces of historic adhesive or removed caption material. The newspaper-library stamp is considerably faded, but the date 20 February 1981 remains clearly visible.
The wire-transmitted image displays the slightly softened definition and heightened contrast characteristic of the process. The blanket-covered figure, escorting officers, barred police van and courthouse entrance nevertheless remain clear and visually forceful.
