Beswick Alice in Wonderland Complete Set 11 Figures 1970s Alice Series

Description

An original and complete set of all eleven Beswick Alice in Wonderland ceramic figures, produced in England between approximately 1973 and 1983.

The collection comprises:

  • Alice
  • White Rabbit
  • Mad Hatter
  • Mock Turtle
  • Cheshire Cat
  • Gryphon
  • Dodo
  • King of Hearts
  • Queen of Hearts
  • Fish Footman
  • Frog Footman

This is the complete Beswick Alice Series rather than a partial or assembled group. Complete sets are much less frequently encountered than individual figures and have particular appeal to collectors of Beswick pottery, Lewis Carroll memorabilia and British literary ceramics.

The designs are closely based upon Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Each character is moulded in glazed earthenware and individually decorated, retaining the distinctive expressions, costumes and eccentric characterisation of Carroll’s Wonderland.

The series was introduced in 1973, following Royal Doulton’s acquisition of Beswick, and individual models were created by leading Beswick modellers including Albert Hallam, Graham Tongue and David Lyttleton. Known model numbers include:

  • White Rabbit – 2477
  • Mock Turtle – 2478
  • Mad Hatter – 2479
  • Gryphon – 2485
  • Frog Footman – 2547

Alice is the tallest figure, measuring approximately 12–12.5 cm high. The remaining figures vary in size according to character. Each carries an appropriate printed Beswick or Royal Doulton-era factory mark to the underside.

Features Include:

  • Complete set of all eleven original Beswick Alice Series figures
  • Made in England during the 1970s and early 1980s
  • Based upon Sir John Tenniel’s classic illustrations
  • Individually moulded, glazed and hand decorated
  • Includes the scarcer Alice, White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat and Frog Footman figures
  • An impressive display group with strong literary and decorative appeal
