• “M. THOMAS ‘TOMMY’ STARKES, 67, a minister of Las Vegas, passed away May 19, 2007. He was born Oct. 8, 1939, in Eastland, Texas, and was a Nevada resident for 23 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wayland College in Plainview, Texas in 1961, and his master’s from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In 1966, he was awarded a doctorate from the University of Iowa and also did post-doctorate work at the University of Wisconsin and Nigerian Baptist Seminary in Nigeria. He served as a missionary in Panama and Nigeria. He served as director for the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board’s Interfaith Witness Department and worked in academia as a professor at Southwest Missouri University and New Orleans Baptist Seminary.
“TOMMY came to Las Vegas in December 1984 and for more than 20 years, he served as chaplain at several hotels, including the Flamingo, Bally’s, the Tropicana, the MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. He became pastor at The Church on the Strip (now Tropicana Christian Fellowship) in 1985. He led Bible studies for hotel employees and, in recent years, conducted church services in places like the poker room at the Bellagio to minister to the increasingly large number of professional poker players.
“In addition, he served as chaplain for the UNLV football and baseball teams and has ministered to hundreds of players in the sports he loved. He was chaplain for the National Finals Rodeo and would often conduct worship services each night at the Thomas & Mack. He served with the Community Interfaith Counsel for many years and was recently selected to chair the local committee for the Franklin Graham Harvest Crusade….”

Book is square & firm. Cover-wraps are bright & clean with scratching & smudging (from normal handling). Top edge of front has two tiny (hard-to-see) cuts. Inside front cover has a small smudge. Corners are merely lightly bumped. Light wear along edges. There’s a crease on the front cover that parallels the spine. Spine is tight & uncreased with lightly bumped tips. Text-block edges are clean but lightly age-toned. There’s an ex-libris stamp & some writing in ink on the front free endpaper. All the other pages, though lightly toned, are bright & clean—with no other writing, no underlining, no highlighting, no foxing, no staining, no tears/rips, no foul odor, etc.

GRADING SYSTEM. For books and magazines (and even other items), we use these terms (in order of desirability):

“POOR.” Except in rare cases, for rare items, we tend to avoid selling items that are in utterly “POOR” condition. It is more likely that on a rare item, only one part of an item (out of numerous parts) will be described as “POOR.”
RETURNS. We accept that you may wish to return a purchase because you genuinely think we haven't described and graded its condition properly. We accept that we our* imperfect. We also accept that people can see things differently—and still be civil!
