The photograph is dated 12 March 1975, during the final weeks of the Cambodian Civil War. Phnom Penh fell to Khmer Rouge forces on 17 April 1975, only a little over a month after this image was transmitted.
Highway 4 was an important strategic route connecting Phnom Penh with the port of Kompong Som. Government forces fought to retain control of the road and surrounding settlements as Khmer Rouge forces tightened their pressure upon the capital.

This is a genuine period Associated Press radiophoto produced for contemporary newspaper publication. It is not a modern reproduction.
Fair to good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general age toning, light surface marking and newsroom handling wear. Several creases and pressure marks affect the sheet, particularly near the upper margin, with minor edge and corner wear.
The reverse displays widespread age toning, faint staining and handling marks, together with the original newspaper-library stamp and receiving date. The contemporary caption remains substantially legible and the central image retains good contrast and definition.
