The contemporary Associated Press caption printed along the left margin states substantially that the troops were:
“Weighed down with extra packs of ammunition”
as they moved towards an insurgent-held village approximately five miles from Phnom Penh. It records that the village was subsequently retaken after day-long fighting.
The photograph was transmitted and received on 7 August 1973. The caption states that the fighting occurred on Sunday, indicating that the scene was probably photographed on 5 August 1973.
The image dates from a particularly intense phase of the Cambodian Civil War. Insurgent forces were then operating only a few miles from the capital, while Cambodian government troops fought to keep Route 1 open. Contemporary reporting records fierce fighting along the highway and American air strikes against positions threatening Phnom Penh.
The photograph was taken shortly before direct United States combat air operations over Cambodia ended on 15 August 1973. The smoke from the air strikes therefore gives the image additional historical significance as a record of the final days of direct American aerial intervention in Cambodia.
The reverse bears the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp and a contemporary receiving stamp dated 7 August 1973.

Good condition for an original working newspaper photograph. There is general age-related toning, light surface marking and normal handling wear. Several minor marginal creases and small edge faults are present, including a short crease entering from the left edge and slight wear and softening at the corners.
Contemporary black editorial crop lines run along the lower and right-hand margins. The original transmitted caption is faint in places but remains substantially legible. The reverse displays light toning and handling marks, together with the Shields Gazette Library stamp and receiving date.
The central photographic image remains clear and well contrasted.
