Piloted by Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown, the modified Vickers Vimy completed the world's first non-stop transatlantic flight, departing Newfoundland and reaching Ireland after approximately sixteen hours in the air. Forced to land in the soft bogland near Clifden, the aircraft overturned but the crew emerged safely, securing a milestone that transformed long-distance aviation.
Issued as a contemporary newsroom photograph, this example bears the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp on the reverse dated 29 March 1969, confirming its use within the newspaper's photographic archive. Although produced fifty years after the flight to mark the anniversary, it remains an original period press photograph documenting one of the defining moments in early aviation.
