T-18 1861 $20 CSA CONFEDERATE CURRENCY NOTE Plate C, Grade PMG 15 Choice Fine. It's just me... I like the way the ink bleeds through the back making it authentic!

Confederate currency was issued by the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861 – 1865) to finance the war effort and assert sovereignty. The first series, known as the "Montgomery Issue," was authorized in March 1861 and circulated shortly after, featuring denominations from $50 to $1,000 and initially backed by gold and silver deposits. Over the war, 70–72 different series were issued, with designs ranging from portraits of historical figures to allegorical images, trains, ships, and depictions of enslaved people. As the war progressed, the notes lost backing by precious metals and were ultimately redeemable only by a promise of post-war payment, which never materialized, rendering them worthless as currency after the Confederacy's defeat.

Denominations: 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1,000

Printing: Notes were often printed on rice paper or other available materials, hand-signed, and hand-cut, leading to irregular edges.

Designs: Included Confederate leaders, allegorical figures, and local scenes; some notes were printed by state or local banks - adding variety.

Counterfeits: Both Northern and Southern counterfeit notes circulated, making authentication important for collectors.
