An antique three-piece fish sauce boat/ dish produced by Carl Knoll –Karlsbad Porzellanfabrik (Carlsbad Porcelain). This really unusual and, I believe, rare sauce dish has three pieces – the tiered base which is the bain-marie; the sauce/ beurre-blanc holder in the form of a fish and the third part is a 'stepped' lid. The lid has two small tabs/ protrusions that hook under the rim of the sauce holder to prevent the lid from falling off when serving the sauce; the tail is the handle and the sauce is poured from the fish’s open mouth. The saucer-shaped tiers, the fish and the lid are decorated with sepia/ reddish-brown coloured floral designs and fishscales. Including the lid it measures approximately 14.3cm high x 7.5cm base diameter. Mouth to tail the fish measures approximately 22cm. Judging by the raised base mark I think this dates to 1900-1910 when luxury painted items were being produced. The raised hexagon hexagon with one of the letters of the word PATENT in each of the six corners, has an intertwined "CK" inside a circle, in the centre. Condition – the bain marie part is in very good condition; the lid has glaze crazing – the lines are quite long and I think this may have happened at the kiln firing stage (see last photos); the second point of the dorsal fin of the fish has a small chip (last photo).
