This decorative ceramic stacking box set in the traditional Jūbako form — notable as these are far more commonly found in lacquerware, making this porcelain piece less typical. Assembled height approximately 11 inches. Features hand-painted and gilt enamel decoration throughout, including a seigaiha wave pattern, crane medallion, and textile-inspired panels in blue, gold, and green. The gray mottled cloud motif is intentional ink-wash style decoration. Decoration wraps cohesively across all tiers when assembled.
Bears two marks: 1) an iron-red seal mark in a rectangular cartouche appearing to read 寿 (ju/kotobuki), meaning longevity — an auspicious character highly appropriate to the celebratory purpose of jūbako — and 2) a two-character brushwork inscription in running script across the tiers. Decorative style consistent with Meiji to early Showa period, estimated early-to-mid 20th century. Offered as found; origin unconfirmed. ***There is a noticable chip as well as marks but from age and original production.
