He was born in Überlingen and moved from Lindau on Lake Constance to Zurich in 1817, where he founded his own lithographic printing company in 1820. In 1830 he founded a lithographic institute with an attached book and art store in Schaffhausen. He was best known for his lithographs in the zoological works of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz. Brodtmann's work is characterized by scientific accuracy and high aesthetic standards.
