A very fine example of a late 18th early 19th silk sampler of one hemisphere of the globe. This sampler is intricately stitched with black tread to form all the countries, names and lines of longitude and latitude, the attention to detail is stunning. The globe is bordered by colourful garlands of flowers and ribbon. There is the addition of two stitched figures above the globe to give it that authentic map look.

The sampler is presented in its original gilt Georgian frame with roundels to the corners. The frame measures 56cm x 58.5cm and the map is 43.5cm in diameter. The sampler is not signed, so we do not know who made it and exactly when, but the style and frame dates it between 1780 and 1820.

Condition: Generally is very good, much better than many examples from this period. With the sampler there are three tears to the background silk, off the map in the bottom left hand quarter ( as shown in photos ). There is some colour fading to the flowers.

The frame has been repainted in gold paint at some point rather than gilt. There are some minor losses to the frame edge and a couple of cracks to the inner frame.
