Haliotis diversicolor / Abalone shell : Abalone, known scientifically as Haliotis diversicolor, is a fascinating sea snail found in various coastal waters. This marine mollusk is recognized for its colorful appearance and tasty meat, which are highly valued in many cuisines. Its unique shell structure and vibrant colors make it an important species for both fisheries and aquaculture.

Haliotis diversicolor, also a common name The Variously Colored Abalone, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Haliotidae, the abalone.

The size of the shell varies between 25 mm and 85 mm. The shell is long and oval. The spire is very near the margin. The surface of the shell is spirally lyrate; the lines are unequal, rounded and crossed by low folds indicating former positions of the peristome.

Its color pattern is reddish-brown, scarlet and green in irregular patches and streaks. The coloration is very variable. The oval perforations number usually 7 to 9. There is no angle at the row of perforations, and the space between perforations and the columellar margin has unequal spiral cords, not coarser than those of the rest of the disk. The inner surface is silvery with light green and red reflections. The two sides are equally curved, and the back is quite convex. The columellar plate is rather narrow, flattened, sloping inward, not in the least truncate at the base. It is so wide above as to wholly conceal the cavity of the spire.

This species is variable and rather bright in coloration, distinguished by its long oval form, numerous perforations and spiral libation.

The bright rainbow iridescent color compares to Ancient Roman Glass.

This species occurs in temperate northwestern Pacific Ocean off Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam off Australia and in Indonesian waters including Bali. The shell from these last two sites differs somewhat from the holotype by being a bit more elongate and having a dark sepia color.

Abalone has been harvested for seafood and aesthetics since prehistory. Abalone shells and associated materials, like their claw-like pearls and nacre, have been used as jewelry and for buttons, buckles and inlay.

These shells have been found in archaeological sites around the world, ranging from 100,000-year-old deposits.

Aquafarming of abalone as a meat product began in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Japan and China.

Since the mid-1990s, there have been many increasingly successful endeavors to commercially farm abalone for the purpose of consumption.

Abalone has long been a valuable food source for humans in every area of the world where a species is abundant. The meat of this mollusc is considered a delicacy in certain parts of the worlds (particularly France, New Zealand, East Asia and Southeast Asia.

Black Pinna Pen shell   Pinna Pen shell – Atrina inflata are large saltwater clams sometimes known as pen shells. They are marine bivalve mollusks.

Pen pearl is a term used for pearls from the shell species Pinna. This species is found in the waters of the Indian and Pacific Ocean and also in the Mediterranean.  These shells produce both nacreous and non-nacreous pearls. The pearls often exhibit a dark grey to black body color with overtones of bright green, blue, purple, silver, and pink.

We buy natural pearls directly from the divers throughout the Indo Pacific region.
