The start of 2026 saw big changes to the UK freight scene. Most notably for GBRf, with their Class 60s stored and offered for sale, their Class 69s also put into short-term store, more 66/6s introduced and their 99s gradually being delivered. Adding to this, the Freightliner/Heavy Haul split has seen the likes of Class 70s moving from container traffic to quarry stone workings. This edition of Big Freight looks at some of the changes and some of the freight highlights of recent times. If you're a regular viewer, you know what's in store... this is Big Freight 34!

Quainton Stone Trains: Trains of quarry stone serving the HS2 virtual quarry just north Aylesbury have been a highlight of recent times. Mostly operated by GBRf and DCR and originating from Tytherington, Machen and more recently Penmaenmawr, as it stands for now, these are the last regular Class 60 hauled trains in the country boosted with the addition of 60099, now back in service. A typical day is featured with the various moves.

Freightliner 90s: Following the split and sale of Freightliner as we previously knew it, 27 Class 90s now work in the DFLC pool, based at Crewe and these include the locos recently acquired from DB and the lower-numbered former Norwich based locos. Mostly painted in the orange and black livery, with a few celebrities - on a good day - 12 pairs should be in service and if all of the booked trains are running, seven or eight of these pairs run up and down the WCML each weeknight. Footage comes from Carlisle, Lancaster and Preston, with an attempt to film all 27 of them!

Derby Days: Derby, Stenson Junction and Spondon continue to provide a feast of traction highlights. From 60s on stone trains to 73s on IM, add steel, containers, oil, engineers, ballasts, unit moves and odd workings and you've almost got the lot! Highlights from visits during 2025 include the lesser-seen 37508 hauling a track machine and the final Class 70 Lindsey oil trains.

S&C Revisited: 2025 marked 150-years of the opening of the famous S&C route and following our extensive look at the freight flows over the line on Big Freight 32, we return to see the new branch to Horton Quarry now operational. A typical move is featured plus footage from Garsdale.
