Vintage Kutani Ware Round Ceramic Clay Bell with Plum & Chrysanthemum

Description:This is a vintage Japanese Shinto amulet clay bell (Dorei) from the historic Atsuta Jingu Shrine in Nagoya.

Known as a "Makiwara Bell," it is modeled after the sacred festival boats decorated for the annual Atsuta Festival.

"Makiwara" refers to a traditional festival display where hundreds of paper lanterns are tiered in a massive dome shape over a base woven from straw. This bell beautifully replicates those festival boats, which feature 365 glowing lanterns.

The top portion is elegantly finished in gold, representing the lanterns. Believed to be from the 1980s, this charm serves as a traditional lucky souvenir for warding off evil and makes a highly unique addition to any Japanese folk art collection.
