Notes

Vol. 1 is second edition. First edition was published in 1825 by Constable, with part title: Part first, Land birds.

"Although issued partly in connection with the volume of plates, under the same title (at the time of issue), text and plates were purchasable separately and the publishers ... express the hope, also voiced by the author in his preface to the present work, that the text will constitute an independent work of reference"--Zimmer, J.T. Ayer Lib., p. 573.

The plates were issued separately in 19 parts between 1819 and 1834, and reissued with varying numbers of plates over the years; individual copies vary. There was no text printed along with the plates. About 1819 Selby issued a separate quarto volume of letterpress describing the land birds, but very few copies were printed ... by issuing the text separately, Selby avoided having to deposit copies of the expensive plates at the Stationer's Office. -- Cf.
