After we picked this item, it sat for a while. I know absolutely nothing about fencing. However, the foil kept calling me back to it. I found the hexagon knob on the bottom unscrews, and the handle, the black pad and guard all slide off the blade. I took steel wool and cleans some of the corrosion off to reveal a beautiful guard. I did the same with the blade and applied a small bit of silicone. That revealed the makers mark and country of manufacturer. This is a beautiful piece. You will not be disappointed.

I learned a lot during this time. The differences in the blade cross section determines whether it’s a epee, foil or sword. This is a foil with its rectangular cross section. The measurement was taken in it’s assembled state. The foil blade length is actually 42 1/2”.
