Item Specifics
Description
This is a Philco Jr. Model 80 cathedral radio from 1932/1933, one of the most recognizable tabletop radio designs ever produced. The cathedral arch cabinet style — introduced by Philco in 1930 and widely copied by every major radio manufacturer — remains the defining visual icon of the early Depression-era American home. The Model 80 was Philco's entry-level price leader for the 1932/33 season, offered at $18.75 complete with tubes, and sold in extraordinary numbers — Philco moved 17,000 units in a single week in December 1932 alone. Despite its high production volume it remains one of the most sought-after display pieces in the vintage radio collector market for its striking visual presence.
The cabinet is walnut veneer in generally good overall shape for its age. The warm medium brown wood grain is attractive and largely intact. Veneer delamination is present on both side panels — the veneer has separated from the wood substrate at two horizontal locations per side — but the underlying wood is sound and the delamination is repairable with appropriate wood glue and clamping. This is a routine repair for anyone with woodworking experience and does not affect the structural integrity of the cabinet. The front face shows surface scratches consistent with age and use. The grille cloth — original bronze/copper woven mesh — is present but shows a tear/puncture at the center of the inner arch opening. The decorative "PHILCO JR." escutcheon is present, legible, and intact with its ornate scroll surround. Both original control knobs are present — the center knurled dome knob and the lower black bakelite knob.
The chassis contains 4 vacuum tubes as originally equipped — Tung-Sol branded tubes are visible, and one tube is housed in a metal shield enclosure at the right side of the chassis as original to this model. The transformer, capacitor cans, and speaker are present. The field coil speaker is mounted at the top of the cabinet interior. The original chassis label on the bottom reads "PHILCO / Model 80 A.C. Volts [specifications] / PHILCO RADIO AND TELEVISION CORPORATION / Philadelphia, Pa. / Made in U.S.A." — the label is aged and partially damaged but the model number is legible.
The power cord is the original cloth-covered type and the insulation has completely deteriorated throughout its length — the cloth braiding is frayed and the inner conductors are exposed at multiple points. This cord must be fully replaced before any attempt to power the radio. The radio has never been powered by the current owner and functional status is entirely unknown. This radio is sold strictly as-is for restoration or display purposes.
Do not plug this radio in under any circumstances in its current condition. Beyond the cord, vintage radios of this era require capacitor replacement before safe operation — plugging in an unrestored set risks damage to the transformer and other irreplaceable components. A professional vintage radio restoration service should be consulted before any attempt to operate.
This is a complete, unmodified example of one of the most visually iconic American radios ever made — the cabinet, chassis, tubes, knobs, escutcheon, and speaker all present and original. It displays beautifully as found and represents an excellent restoration candidate.
