The pre-eminent sand-stabilising plant of tropical beaches globally — its long trailing stems and deep tuberous roots bind loose sand and prevent coastal erosion. Multi-use plant (animal food, poison, medicine, environmental, social, invertebrate food). Important host plant for several butterflies in coastal zones.
