Description
I. G. Farbenindustrie (Farben) was a German chemicals and drug manufacturer. It was created in 1925 from the merger of 6 Germany firms, to include Bayer, AGFA and BASF. It was once the largest industry in Europe and the largest chemical manufacturer in the world. Farben was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Nazi party and relied on concentration camp slave labor to operate multiple facilities. A subsidiary produced the gas used to kill prisoners at Auschwitz and other camps. The company was seized by the Allies at the end of World War Ii, which ultimately led to its liquidation into the original 6 firms. A number of Farben executives were convicted of war crimes.
