Bursera aptera seeds grow into a distinctive Mexican elephant tree native to the desert and dry shrubland biome of Mexico. This species — whose epithet aptera means 'wingless' — is noted for its distinctive leaf structure in which the leaflets lack the winged rachis margins found in many related species, giving the foliage a more spare, architectural appearance. Like all Bursera, it develops a swollen water-storing trunk with exfoliating papery bark revealing colourful underlayers, and is fully deciduous in the dry season, exposing the elegant branching and caudiciform stem at its most striking.

Bursera aptera is associated with the remarkably biodiverse desert flora of Mexico's dry valleys. It demands full sun, very sharp drainage and a dry winter rest — conditions that replicate the strongly seasonal aridity of its natural habitat.
